Casting and Costume Research

Amber

The main protagonist of the opening Amber will be played by Caitlin Warner, who is 16 years old. As we wanted this character to have the typical features often of the 'popular' girl in school in mainstream media, we felt aesthetically she would fit the part best. We also know she has acting experience from in and outside of school so this would benefit the effectiveness of our opening. We feel the blonde hair and blue eyes will depict the character as innocent due to traditional conventions and help portray her as a typical popular teenage girl which will contrast nicely with the characters true nature further on into the film. As the actress is young herself we feel it will help the audience relate more and appeal to our target audience for this reason and makes it more realistic. She will be wearing more makeup than typically as the opening is supposed to occur after a party, she will be wearing a black skinny jeans and a long sleeved crop top to again fit these stereotypes. It is also from my observations less common for people my age to get all dressed up for party's hence the jeans as we want to relate to our target audience.

Brad

This is Amber's boyfriend which will be played by Tom Brinsden, who is 17 years old. We wanted him as Brad for similar reasons as we felt he fit the typical popular guy in high school profile. He is also taller than Caitlin Warner who is playing Amber and physically stronger which we felt was important for the opening as it depicts him as intimidating and a possible threat. Like Caitlin he is an actual teenager which will help our target audience relate more and resonate with the character. As his shot is outside he will be wearing a coat, most likely a jersey and jeans with a plain shirt, he has short hair which will again help fit social norms.

Violet

Violets character is Amber's best friend however is not actually seen in the opening as she is only involved as she texts Amber, therefor we have not had to go through a casting process for this character. They're isn't any costume for this character in the opening as she is only portrayed over text messages on a screen.

Killer

This will be played by Emma Banbury, the murderer is anonymous throughout the opening so therefore we didn't have to think in depth about appearance and more mannerisms and her ability to move and gesture in certain ways to depict the murderer as a disturbed/ creepy character. She will be wearing all black including over her face and black gloves as this will help to portray a dark yet thought out character as it the outfit is more about the practicality of not getting caught rather than the fear factor. This is why her ability to move in certain ways is important to create the fear factor. To create the impression that she has 'no face' and it just appears black, we will use black mesh material so we don't completely obstruct her vision but hopefully achieve the effect we're looking for. In our society hoodies are often associated with danger and feared as it can be used to hide someone's identity especially in criminal acts, nowadays there are often signs asking people to take their hoods off in shops etc. Therefor we wanted to create this same established fear in our audience by having the killer with their hood up and face hidden.
